DEARBORN, Mich. -- August 19, 1996 -- James C. Leslie, Ph.D., of Fountain Valley, Calif., has been selected as one of 10 members of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) to be inducted into its 1996 College of Fellows. Chosen for his many years of outstanding contributions to manufacturing and SME, Dr. Leslie will be installed as a Fellow November 11 during the AUTOFACT '96 awards banquet in Detroit. President and CEO of Advanced Composite Products and Technology, Inc. (ACPT) in Huntington Beach, Calif., Dr. Leslie has pioneered the development of advanced composite manufacturing technology, specifically the transfer of aerospace manufacturing technology to commercial and industrial applications. The work he directed and the technology he developed has been proven through demonstration in the fabrication of actual hardware. Dr. Leslie, an SME member since 1985, joined the Composites Manufacturing Association of SME (CMA/SME) in 1991. He served as the nominations chairman and is currently completing his fifth year as an elected member of CMA/SME's Board of Advisors. Dr. Leslie has chaired and presented papers at national and international symposia and freely shared his knowledge throughout the industry. Among the several SME topics he has presented are tutorials on filament winding and the introduction, application, and fabrication of advanced composites. As a result of his achievements and activity, Dr. Leslie has received local, national and international honors and recognition. In addition to CMA/SME, he has been a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Chemical Society, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering, American Society of Materials, and the American Society of Composites. Dr. Leslie holds a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree and doctorate from Ohio State University. He has authored numerous technical publications and has received many technical and community service honors. The Fellows, nominated by industry and SME peers, are selected for their outstanding contribution spanning over 20 years of manufacturing experience in areas such as industry or educational service management, technical publishing, research and development, inventions and patents, consulting, and SME service. Additional requirements include SME membership and a bachelor's degree or equivalent engineering experience. ACPT is internationally recognized for its composites development and manufacturing capabilities. The company designs, develops, and manufactures fleet-deployed submarine radomes; manufactures composite cryogenic hardware useful at 4 degrees Kelvin; designs and manufactures drive shafts approved for racing; has developed and produces high-speed rollers for industrial applications, and manufactures space-approved booster and satellite components. CMA/SME is applications-oriented. It provides manufacturing professionals with information on composites manufacturing processes, applications, and tooling. SME, headquartered in Dearborn, Mich., U.S.A., is an international professional society dedicated to serving its members and the manufacturing community through the advancement of professionalism, knowledge, and learning. Founded in 1932, SME has more than 70,000 members in 70 countries. The Society also sponsors some 300 chapters, districts, and regions, as well as 240 student chapters worldwide.
