Advanced Composite Drill Pipe

Discover the Possibilities

Beginning in 1998, ACPT Inc. partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL) to research the potential for composite drill pipe to boost the U.S. oil and gas production. ACPT demonstrated improved effectiveness in certain drilling operations with the use of advanced composite drill pipe. This was a direct result of ACPT’s real world experience and expertise in advanced composite innovations.

Since then, ACPT, Inc. has accomplished numerous technological innovations which have been instrumental in the commercialization of several composite drilling applications. Included are 30-ft long sections of flexible drill pipe, composite drill collars, and various other downhole components. All of these have been tailored to meet specific requirements and many are still under development for our customers.

The light weight, increased flexibility, electromagnetic transparency and longer fatigue life of composite materials invite the exploitation of these materials for many applications in the oil field. Our experienced technical staff would love the opportunity to help investigate the utilization of composite materials in your unique application.

  • Advantages & Benefits
  • Components

Advanced Composite drill pipe consists of materials made of carbon fiber and epoxy resin. The mechanical properties are comparable to steel at less than half the weight. The composite drill pipe offers superior flexibility for drilling the short radius well bores required to extend horizontal laterals at shallow depths

The composite drill pipe components are based upon technology derived from decades of research and production in the aviation, space, & defense industry. These advanced technical capabilities are not available in traditional drilling pipe made of metal. Of the many advantages composites have when compared to traditional drilling equipment, the ones below are the most noticeable.

  • Substantially reduced weight – ½ the weight of steel
  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Flexibility
  • Extended Fatigue life
  • Natural Damping
  • Low Heat Transfer
  • Electrical Resistance
  • Acoustic Emission Sensitivity
  • Reparability
  • Short radius turns
  • Customizable to specific requirements

Composite Drill Collars

ACPT Inc. designs and builds custom composite drill collars, subs, isolators, casings and drill pipe tailored to specific application requirements. These units are specifically designed to replace metal for various reasons.

Some desired properties that have been accommodated include:

  • Non-magnetic
  • Non-conductive (electrical)
  • Non-sparking
  • Corrosion Resistant
  • Light weight
  • Compatible threads/connections
  • Compatible tensile, compressive, torsion, pressure and stiffness ratings
  • Abrasion resistant coating
  • Wear bands (centralizers)
